Ice Pack

This is one of the most simple sunburn remedies. An ice pack can provide soothing relief if the sunburn is mild.

Wrap an ice pack in a damp cloth and hold it over the sunburn. You can also improvise and use a bag of frozen peas for example.

Whatever you use, make sure to wrap it first so that you don't place ithe ice pack directly against your skin.

Cold Water

You can use plain water from the faucet or you can add a few ice cubes. Soak a cloth in the liquid and then lay it over the burn.

Repeat every few minutes as the cloth warms. Apply several times a day. This is another one of the more simpler sunburn remedies on the list.

Another alternative, especially for a larger areas, is a cool bath.

Keep adding water as needed to keep the water at the proper temperature.

Go easy on the soap. Soap can dry and irritate burned skin. If you must use soap, use only a mild brand and rinse it off very well. Do not soak in soapy water and stay away from bubble baths.

After you're done, do not rub your skin with a towel, but rather pat your skin dry with the towel.

To even further reduce the pain, itching and inflammation, mix 1 cup of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar into the tub of cool water.

Aloe Vera

One of the best sunburn remedies is Aloe Vera. Break off a leave of this plant and apply the juice directly to the burned area. Just smear it all over the sun burned area liberally.

Black Nightshade

Another one of the better sunburn remedies is black nightshade. Crush black nightshade leaves, stir them into heavy cream and pat the mixture on your sunburn.

Baking Soda

Baking Soda is a very effective sunburn remedy. Generously sprinkle baking soda into cool bath water.

Instead of toweling off, let the solution dry on your skin. It is completely non-toxic, and it will soothe the pain.

Calendula

Research has shown that calendula flowers speed the healing of a sunburn by closing wounds, reducing inflammation and stimulating the growth of new skin cells, thus making it one of the most ideal sunburn remedies. Many skin creams contain Calendula.

Comfrey

Another one of the more effective sunburn remedies is comfrey. Place 1 ounce of dried comfrey root in a saucepan. Add 1 pint of water and bring to a boil.

Simmer for 20 minutes, then remove from the heat. Cool the liquid in the refrigerator and then strain it.

Apply with cotton balls to small areas or use a wash cloth on larger areas. However, don't use comfrey on badly burned skin with broken blisters.

Vinegar

Vinegar resides near the top of the list of sunburn remedies. Splashing vinegar onto a bad case of sunburn will take the sting out of it in a matter of seconds. You will probably have to reapply it every 20 minutes or so, but it definitely gets the job done.

Witch Hazel

Moisten a cloth with Witch Hazel and apply it to your sunburn. This incredible astringent has been shown to give long-lasting anti-inflammatory relief and ranks very high on the list of sunburn home remedies.

Apply often for temporary relief. For smaller areas, dip cotton balls into the liquid and gently smooth it on.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is one of the most traditional sunburn remedies. Break open capsules of vitamin E and smear it directly on the sunburned areas.

Black Tea and Peppermint

This is also one of the better sunburn remedies. Brew a pot of black tea and let it cool. Pour the tea through a strainer into a spray bottle.

Add peppermint oil at a ratio of four drops per every 4 ounces of tea.

Shake the bottle well and spray the mixture on your sunburn as often as needed. Do not spray near your eyes.

If your eyelids are sunburned, soak tea bags in ice water, then use them as compresses directly on your eyelids.

Apple

Apples are one of the most effective sunburn remedies on your eyelids. Apply a poultice of grated apple over the eyes for 20 minutes to relieve swelling and irritation.

Lettuce

Boil lettuce leaves in water. Strain them, then let the liquid cool a couple hours in the refrigerator. Dip cotton balls into the liquid and gently press or stroke onto the irritated skin areas.

Yogurt

This is also one of the simplest sunburn remedies. Apply yogurt to the sunburned areas. Rinse it off in a cool shower, then gently pat the skin dry.

Oatmeal

Wrap dry oatmeal in cheesecloth or gauze. Run cool water through it. Discard the oatmeal and soak compresses in the liquid. Apply every two to four hours.

Aluminum Acetate

This is one of the best sunburn remedies that come with a bad case of severe itching.

For relief from intense itching caused by sunburns, try mixing Domeboro's powder packets with water. These are available in drugstores.

The aluminum acetate in the powder keeps skin from getting too dry or itchy. Follow the directions on the package.

Moisturizers

Moisturizers are some of the most common sunburn remedies. After soaking in a bath, smooth on some bath oil. Let it soak in for a couple minutes, then apply a moisturizing cream or lotion, such as Eucerin.

Another good lotion is called Wibi, which contains a little bit of cooling menthol.

Cucumbers

Another one of the better sunburn remedies. Apply the juice from cucumbers directly to your sunburn areas to relieve the pain.

Cornstarch

Add enough water to cornstarch to make a paste. Then apply it directly to the sunburn.

Wheat Germ Oil

This is one of the more interesting sunburn remedies. Before going out into the sun apply a Wheat Germ Oil ointment on your skin.

Tests have shown that subjects who use this ointment have developed suntans instead of sunburn when out in the sun.
