Hangover Remedies

Time

I know you don't want to here this, but the ultimate in hangover remedies is the passing of approximately 24 hours of time.

In the meantime, try some of these other hangover remedies to relieve the main symptoms of the hangover - nausea, fatigue and headache.

Water

Alcohol dehydrates the body severely. Drinking lots of water before you go to bed, during the night, and when you get up in the morning will help you combat the symptoms of a hangover.

Reishi

On the morning after, take three 60 mg capsules twice per day. Reishi assists the liver in processing alcohol from the body. Some brands offer capsules that contain both reishi and ginger, which is the more potent version of these hangover remedies.

Feverfew

Start this during the party and repeat it during the day after. Take three 80 mg capsules three times per day.

Willow Bark

A natural alternative to aspirin, willow bark, taken in capsule form has been known to be one of the more effective natural hangover remedies.

Fructose

Fructose helps the body burn up alcohol faster. In the morning after, drink a large glass of orange juice or tomato juice, which both contain high amounts of fructose.

Also, honey contains a lot of fructose. Take a few tablespoons of honey directly, or put some honey on crackers for breakfast.

Vitamin B

Another one of the more effective hangover remedies because drinking depletes vitamin B from your system. Replenish your body's supply of vitamin B and you will usually shorten the duration of your hangover.

Ginger

Add 1 teaspoon of dried ginger or 2 teaspoons of grated fresh ginger to 1 cup of boiling water. Remove from the heat and let it set covered for about 10 minutes and then drink as a tea.

Dandelion And Burdock

This tea is one of the better hangover remedies because it aids the liver in purging the toxins from your body. Add 1/2 teaspoon of burdock herb and 1/2 teaspoon of dandelion herb to 1 cup of boiling water. Remove from heat and let it set for about 10 minutes. Drink it as a tea.

Drink Slowly

Your body burns alcohol at a rate of about 1 ounce per hour. The slower you drink, the less alcohol gets in your blood and reaches your brain.

Choice Of Beverage

One of the less obvious hangover remedies is in choosing what to drink in the first place. All alcoholic beverages contain sugars and congeners that play a big role in the severity of the hangover. Some contain more than others.

Vodka seems to be less painful, while cognacs, brandies, champagnes and especially rums and whiskeys are more painful. Also, red wine contains tyramine, which can cause a severe headache.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is one of the most important hangover remedies because it helps protect the liver from alcohol poisoning.

Take three 120 mg capsules three times per day. Begin taking when you start drinking and continue the day after.

Ginkgo

Ginkgo aids circulation and can help to revitalize your system. Take two 80 mg capsules twice a day for two days after drinking heavily.

Eat First

Besides drinking less, this is probably the second best of all hangover remedies. A stomach full of food slows the rate that alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream and therefore less alcohol reaches the brain.
