Gingivitis Treatment

Bloodroot

Bloodroot is a very effective herbal gingivitis treatment because it contains high amounts of sanguinarine, which is an antiseptic compound that prevents bacteria from forming plaque.

Look for toothpaste that contains sanguinarine, such as Viadent, or for severe cases, use a bloodroot extract.

Camomile

Camomile contains lots of antiseptic and anti-inflammatory compounds making it an excellent herbal gingivitis treatment. You can drink this as well as just use it as a mouthwash.

Mix 3 teaspoons of herb with 1 cup of boiling water. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then strain. Drink after meals or use as a moutwash.

Goldenseal

Goldenseal contains berberine and hydrastine, two compounds that have a calming effect on the gums, making it an excellent all natural gingivitis treatment.

Mix 1 tablespoon of goldenseal root powder, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 3 ounces of water and use it as a mouthwash.

Echinacea

Echinacea not only boosts the immune system, it also is a very effective anti-inflammatory. Mix 30 drops of tincture with 3 ounces of water and use it as a mouthwash.

Sage

Known to be possibly just as effective as a sanguinarine toothpaste, sage tea is a very good alternative gingivitis treatment.

Mix 3 teaspoons of dried sage leaves with 1 cup of boiling water. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, strain it and drink.

Rhatany

Rhatany contains high amounts of tannin, an antiseptic astringent, gingivitis treatment. Mix 1 teaspoon of dried rhatany herb in 1 cup of boiling water. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then strain. You can drink it or just use it as a mouthwash.

Propolis

Helps kill bacteria and viruses, and also helps to reduce inflammation. Mix 30 drops of tincture with 3 ounces of water and use as a mouthwash four times per day.

Myrrh

Here's another herbal mouthwash to use as a gingivitis treatment. Myrrh contains tannins, which help to protect the mucous membranes such as the gums and also help reduce inflammation. Mix 30 drops of tincture with 3 ounces of water and use as a mouthwash.

Purslane

Foods like purslane that are high in magnesium have been used successfully for gingivitis treatment. Other foods that contain high amounts of magnesium are spinach, dandelion, poppy seeds, and coriander.
